Tangent #1

Welcome to Tangent issue one. This is spiritual successor to clawed.club. Yes, look, I got too enthusiastic with OpenClaw just like everybody else and really really regret buying that domain now. But we live and we learn. What was fun about clawed.club was I figured out a cool way to curate a newsletter with with OpenClaw and taking everything I learnt and putting into this now.

This is the reboot. OpenClaw is out, Hermes is in. This the new home for my brain dumps and doom-scrolling digest.

This is my weekly Tangent!

💻 Tech News

Wake up babe, another React server component vulnerability dropped and Kent C. Dodds has officially checked out of RSC as a concept. Kent’s always been a measured voice in the React ecosystem. His take: “I’m relieved that I never actually adopted RSC and at this point I’m convinced I never will.”.

If you’re on a framework thats using RSC make sure you’re patched up. Maybe consider jumping to Tanstack Sta…

Tanstack ecosystem got hacked - Sh*t , IS NO WHERE SAFE!? Attackers poisoned TanStack’s GitHub Actions cache via a malicious PR, then abused trusted npm publishing tokens to ship malware-infected packages that stole developer secrets and spread through the supply chain. Once again, everyones looking at npm and thinking of xkcd #2347.

Anyways… Hows about some more React news? Fate 1.0 — The First Full Async React Metaframework. Christoph Nakazawa shipped Fate 1.0 and is calling it the first full Async React metaframework; zero-config live views, Drizzle support, and a “Void Router” that sounds like it belongs in a mecha anime. Do I think this looks cool though? Hell yeah. Do I have time to build another todo list app with this? Hell no!

Moving on.

Nobody… Absolutely no one… Not a single soul of earth… Bun: Lets rewrite in Rust!

Jarred Sumner, the absolute nutter, shows us what a cracked dev with unlimited tokens can do and out of nowhere drop a PR that vibe refactors Bun from Zig to Rust. From the PR description, It shrinks the binary by 3–8 MB, fixes memory leaks, and most importantly: compiler-assisted tools to catch memory bugs that have cost them years. No async Rust, same architecture, same data structures. Sounds good, so why is the upvote/downvote ratio on this one so divisive!? Is vibe coding critical infrastructure still not acceptable yet?

And talking of burning tokens, OpenClaw maintainer Peter Stoiber, just casually spent 1.3 mil on tokens on,check notes, automation!?

👀 Things That Caught My Eye

Datatype — A font that renders characters as charts. Type 12345, get a bar chart. Type a letter, get a sparkline. It’s a real “wait, fonts can do what?” moment. Could be a fun way to visualise issue stats without reaching for D3.

Pokémon TCG Archive — Nearly 20,000 Pokémon TCG cards archived as high-res images on Cosmos and honestly it’s the most dangerous thing you could show a sleep-deprived dad with a credit card and a nostalgia problem.

Claude Code /radio Command — Claude Code now has a /radio fires up Lo-Fi beats.

🎮 Gaming

I’ve playing loads of Pragmata, Capcom’s most unique release in years, and I’m completely hooked. It’s an action game with a hacking mechanic woven into combat and feels so danm good. Capcom are on an incredible run right now. This comes right off the back of completing Resident Evil Requiem, which was also excellent. I’ve missed good ol classic linear third persion shooters.

Star Fox is BACK!!. Screw the haters, I love art style and how it’s capturing the aesthestic of the SNES artwork. 4v4 dogfights, GameShare over GameChat? GIMME GIMME!! Nintendo’s finally giving Arwing combat the treatment it deserves. I haven’t been this excited about a Star Fox since maybe Star Fox adventures!? So hyped for this release.

I know I dont need it, but I want an Anbernic Rotate so danm bad 😭 …

🚧 What I’m Up To

Building this newsletter, I’ve been playing around Hermes whole bunch. it’s the main tool I use to curate weekly links for this newsletter. Next is to hack together a working email newsletter system which I intend to build from scratch using Cloudflare Email Service, wish me luck!

Starting a house renovation — Just cos the chaos of raising a toddler was’nt enough, I’m kicking of a home reno! I wont be flooding this newletter with too much info about it, but maybe more to come in a seperate blog…

And thats a it for this week. See you in the next one!
